John Grunditz

[ Senior Pastor ]

Pastor John came to Calvary in the summer of 2009 after nearly twenty years at New Life Evangelical Free Church in Watertown, South Dakota. John grew up in the Minneapolis area and moved to Fargo after marrying LaVonne in 1970. Both John and LaVonne became Christians in 1973 and he began his career on the staff of Community Baptist Church in 1978. God has blessed them with three boys, who are now married, and have nine grandchildren. He is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary. John and LaVonne love the time they can spend with their sons and their families here in the Minneapolis area and also trips to see their son Joe who serves in the Air Force, currently in Anchorage, Alaska. His Minnesota sports teams like the Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves are always a passion for John. Reading is both a means of relaxing and learning. He especially loves biographies, history, and also the Puritan era pastors and theological writings.

After thirty-four years, 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 is still a life verse for John in his ministry.

And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

Brett Reichman

[ Worship Leader ]

As worship leader at Calvary, my job is to do everything I can to prepare our team of talented musicians and vocalists to lead our congregation into the Lord’s presence every Sunday. I work closely with Pastor John and our pianist every week to pick songs that fit the theme of the message and plan out the order of service.

God has given me the ability to sing and play guitar. Every Sunday, I give those gifts back to him, as meager as they are compared to the grace He bestows on us. Truly every good thing is from Him, so when I sing and play guitar in worship, I’m only giving back what He has given me. Every week, it amazes me how He takes the gifts and talents of everyone on our worship team and seems to multiply them. We come and we give him our voices in song and He in turn gives us an unspeakable joy!

A verse that speaks to me is John 10:10 -- My life before Christ was incredibly lifeless. Today, I feel the joy of being accepted by Him every single waking moment. He didn't just save me from the fires of hell, He offered me life! Not only life, but ABUNDANT life!

What are a few things that I love? Beyond the obvious, “I love to sing praise to our Lord (and often sing at the top of my voice in the car),” I enjoy playing with my daughter + son and hanging out with my wife; I love Montana + Montana mountains; and I love hanging out with good friends, playing games and watching movies. Oh, and I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who!
